About the Observatory

The Pregnancy and Birth Area provides assistance to women throughout the process of pregnancy and the birth of the baby. This includes pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care.

At Hospital General de l'Hospitalet we have an interdisciplinary team of health professionals who guarantee individualized and humanized support in this momentous process in the life of a woman and her family. In the Pregnancy and Birth Area, we work to guarantee the quality of care processes and practice based on scientific evidence.

The Pregnancy and Birth Area has all the technical and human equipment necessary to care for women considered to be at low and high risk during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. We work with the parties from 32 weeks of gestation and babies weighing more than 1,5 kg. We are a public service and we serve the population of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat.

The National Health System awarded us the Best Practices award in 2015 and we are a center accredited by the Department of Health as a center of reference for assistance in physiological and normal childbirth, better known as natural childbirth. We are also accredited as a center for umbilical cord donation.

We have the program welcome family, to inform families of how the Pregnancy and Birth area works and what their care practices are.

Within the program we make known the good practices that are applied based on the evidence, such as the contact skin to skin right after birth, which has shown that it helps to regulate the baby's temperature, strengthens the bond with him and favors the initiation of early breastfeeding (first hour of life), and the caesaria province, a more humanized caesarean section that allows the companion to enter the operating room, which increases both the satisfaction of the woman and her partner, as well as their involvement. Initiation of skin-to-skin and breastfeeding within the same operating room is also encouraged to avoid breaking the mother-baby bond.

Care for the baby is provided, as long as there are no complications, without separating it from the mother, in the delivery room and in the rooms to encourage the model mother-baby binomial and empowering the woman by making her a participant in her own care and that of her child.

On the other hand, the Hospital General de l'Hospitalet has one in operation breastfeeding support group which offers help to mothers who find it difficult to breastfeed. This is a group called Lactabé.
