POSTPARTUM AND THE BABY

Hearing test

What is commonly known as the hearing test is a test for the early detection of hypoacusis or deafness, which is a deficiency due to the loss or alteration of the function of the auditory system.

Its early detection is done through neonatal screening, through a test called automated auditory evoked potentials. This test detects moderate, severe or profound hearing loss or hearing loss.

It is a test that is done during the hospital stay and its result is notified immediately after it is done. The test is very simple and not painful for the baby. It is important that the baby is sleeping while it is being performed and in a space that is as calm and quiet as possible.

What do the results mean?

  • If the test passes: It is very unlikely that the baby has a hearing impairment. It is important to continue to watch your hearing during the early years.
  • If you do not pass the test: it is essential to repeat the test around the first month of life, to verify the results, because there are transitory factors that make it difficult to correctly assess hearing during the first days of life. We will make an appointment to repeat the test at the External Consultations of Hospital General de l'Hospitalet.
