Hospital General de l'Hospitalet opened its doors in November 1971 as a Red Cross initiative aimed at providing health care to Hospitalet de Llobregat (currently the Hospital has a reference population of 500.000 inhabitants). At that time it adopted the name Hospital de la Creu Roja de l'Hospitalet.

In 1991, by agreement between the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish Red Cross, the Consortium for the Management of the Hospital de la Creu Roja de l'Hospitalet was established, with a majority participation by the Generalitat of Catalonia.

In September 1999, the statutes of this consortium were modified and it was renamed the Red Cross Health Consortium in Catalonia, at the same time that the consortium began to incorporate other centres. Finally, in 2002, a final amendment to the bylaws of this entity was approved and the definitive name was Consorci Sanitari Integral. For the centre, the name Hospital General de l'Hospitalet was approved.

Hospital General de l'Hospitalet belongs to the Integral Health System for public use of Catalonia (SISCAT) and is a provider center of the Catalan Health Service. It is located in a building of 18.000 square meters distributed over seven floors.

For organizational and management purposes, Hospital General de l'Hospitalet, Hospital Sociosanitari de l'Hospitalet and Hospital de Sant Joan Despí function as a single center and form the Complex Hospitalari Universitari Moisès Broggi
