Diseases and procedures

  • Cataract

Cataract is the opacification of the crystalline lens and is the most common cause of reversible vision loss in the world. Its treatment is surgical and consists of the extraction of the crystalline lens using ultrasound through an incision of less than 2 mm and the implantation of an intraocular lens. Cataract surgery is done under local anesthesia and sedation. Our service carries out more than 4.000 cataract operations a year.

In addition, we are pioneers in the State in cataract surgery without ultrasound for very mature cataracts and without the use of sutures.

  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye nerve caused by high intraocular pressure and causes loss of visual field. Its treatment is medical in initial stages (with eye drops) and surgical in advanced stages. It requires strict control and that the treatments advised by the specialist are done well. It has a notable hereditary component and is asymptomatic in the initial stages.

  • Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes mellitus that can be asymptomatic in the early stages but cause blindness in advanced stages. Its prevalence is related to the duration of diabetes and poor glycemic control.

The main cause of vision loss in diabetic retinopathy is diabetic macular edema.

Its treatment is done with laser photocoagulation, intravitreal injections and retinal surgery.

  • Retinal detachment

Retinal detachment is an urgent pathology that causes partial or complete loss of vision and that occurs spontaneously or associated with eye trauma. It consists of the separation of the retina from the outermost layer of the eye. Its treatment is surgical through retinal surgery. May require intraocular gas and adopt positions in the postoperative period.

    Age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration is the main cause of irreversible vision loss in people over 70 in our country. Our service treated 1643 patients during the year 2023 with macular pathologies that required 7431 intravitreal injections. This treatment makes it possible to maintain and improve vision in most patients, who without this treatment would be blind.

  • Pterygium

Pterygium is an abnormal triangular-shaped growth of tissue on the conjunctiva that can invade the cornea. In most cases, it does not require any treatment, but if it bothers you or affects your vision, surgery may be necessary. In this case, the pterygium is removed and transplanted with donor conjunctiva from the same patient.

  • Corneal transplant

Corneal transplantation is a surgery that replaces the patient's cornea with a donor cornea graft. The cause is opacification of the cornea due to herpes, corneal edema or corneal scars. Corneal transplantation can be complete or only a part of the cornea and requires maintaining a treatment with eye drops for a long time

Research

The professionals of the Ophthalmology Service publish and present papers at the most important scientific conferences in the country: Catalan Society of Ophthalmology, Sociedad Española de Oftalmología, Sociedad Española de Retina y Vitreo, Sociedad Española de Glaucoma and Sociedad Española de Neurooftalmología as well as at conferences international such as Euretina, Eucornea and the European Glaucoma Congress

The retina unit has initiated three clinical trials in the field of macular degeneration and one clinical trial in the field of retinal detachment surgery. We are part of the genetic database of the hereditary retinal diseases group and of the international research group in retinal diseases FRB (fight retina blindness).

The cornea unit has started a clinical trial in the field of EDOF toric lenses.

Teaching

The professionals of the service are part of the teaching staff of the master's degree in Clinical Optometry at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

We hold monthly sessions on the third Friday of the month with accreditation on ophthalmological pathology

Training in retinography by family doctors in the area

Teaching accreditation was achieved in 2023 and the first MIR place will be offered in 2025.
