About the Observatory
The rheumatologist is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and systemic autoimmune diseases.
As a service referring to its territory, it is present at the Hospital de Sant Joan Despí (HSJD) and the Hospital General de l'Hospitalet (HGH), and at the specialized care centers (CAE) of Sant Feliu, Torrassa and Cornellà It also has a relationship with family doctors through regular consultations.
It serves the reference population from the age of 18, and covers all areas of the specialty, with the exception of pediatric rheumatology. Covers: inflammatory rheumatic pathology such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis; drop; connective diseases such as systemic sclerosis or systemic lupus erythematosus; soft tissue pathology. It contemplates the multidisciplinary management of patients, collaborating with other specialties.
The Rheumatology Service is made up of national reference rheumatologists in different areas of the specialty and an expert clinical nurse:
- Bone metabolic diseases
- vasculitis
- Systemic autoimmune diseases.
- spondyloarthritis
- Joint ultrasound.
- Capillaroscopy.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Salivary gland and temporal artery biopsy.

The service admits decompensated rheumatic pathology that requires a study or treatment that cannot be done on an outpatient basis. Rheumatology is a mainly outpatient specialty
Rheumatology is a mainly outpatient specialty. It has specific consultations for certain pathologies. Specifically, it has agendas shared with the Dermatology Services (psoriatic arthritis consultation at HSJDMB and CAE Torrassa) and Ophthalmology (uveitis consultation at HSJDMB).
The service carries out diagnostic tests such as capillaroscopy and musculoskeletal ultrasound, and uses the electron microscope to view microcrystals.
The service uses a day hospital for intravenous biological treatments. It has a Rapid Diagnostic Unit, with a preferential agenda for pathologies that require an early diagnosis and treatment, such as early rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, among others . It also has a specific specialist quick care consultation for patients with systemic autoimmune disease
The service attends rheumatological emergencies at the request of emergency physicians.
It is carried out by the specialized clinical nurse, through face-to-face visits or by other means (telephone, new technologies)
The rheumatology service has adapted its consultations to the current circumstances, integrating telemedicine, carrying out telephone visits and video consultations

The team treats all rheumatic diseases, making an effort to make early diagnoses and indicate the most appropriate diagnostic techniques and treatment at any given time, including the most appropriate specialist procedures in each situation (arthrocentesis, joint infiltration local, Schirmer test, etc.)

Teaching
- Dacia Cerdà, associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (Clinic Campus).
- Delia Reina, associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (Campus Bellvitge).
- All the rheumatologists and the clinical nurse collaborate with the subject of Rheumatology in the Physiotherapy degree of the University of Girona / University of Barcelona.
The Service participates in the training of the students of the Master of Image of the University of Barcelona
The service serves the MIRs of Family and Community Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Geriatrics and Internal Medicine in their rotations for the specialty of Rheumatology.
- Meetings on demand for primary care. Format: face-to-face consultations.
- Weekly internal clinical sessions: 1) Discussion of clinical cases and assessment of the start of biological therapy and 2) Thematic bibliographic sessions.
- Monthly multidisciplinary autoimmune disease sessions with the participation of the Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Dermatology Services, in addition to the Rheumatology Service.
- Sessions of the locomotor apparatus, with monthly frequency, with participation, together with the Rheumatology Service, of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Services, Rehabilitation and Anesthesia (Pain Clinic).
- Interstitial lung disease committee in collaboration with the Pneumology, Imaging and Pathological Anatomy Services
