310 interventions of the Grief Support Program for relatives of Covid-19 patients

  • Wednesday, July 8, 2020

They were carried out at the Hospital General de l'Hospitalet.

From the Psychiatry Unit of Hospital de Sant Joan Despí, General Hospital and Hospital Sociosanitari de l'Hospitalet, a few months ago the Grief Support Program was launched for relatives of Covid-19 patients who have died in these centers.

During the first period, Group Support was telematic with the families and the de-escalation process was done face-to-face, respecting the security measures established by the competent bodies. In total, 310 interventions were carried out, which required 4 sessions of 60 minutes.

The groups included relatives at higher risk due to the death of more than one member of the same family, due to the existence of intra-familial contagion, as is the case with healthcare personnel, or due to other markedly more traumatic causes.

There have also been 4 groups (3 face-to-face and 1 online) with teenagers, in which a total of 34 family members have participated, representing 11% of those treated during the crisis.

The aim of Group Support has been to reduce the risk of complicated grief and mitigate the feeling of isolation and loneliness. The sessions have been led by two clinical psychologists.
