Benito Fontecha, medical director of Hospital Sociosanitari de l'Hospitalet, has been the new president of the Healthcare Ethics Committee (CEA) of the Integral Health Consortium (CSI) since January. He replaces Francesc Ferrer, a specialist in Internal Medicine and already retired, linked to the committee for the last 20 years. The Care Ethics Committee (CEA) originates from the Bioethics Committee of the Red Cross Hospital (today Dos de Maig Hospital), in 1984. With the opening of the Sant Joan Despí Hospital, the last large center managed by the CSI, this committee was transformed into the Care Ethics Committee for all centers of the Consorci Sanitari Integral created on December 14, 2011.
Benito Fontecha's proposal brings new projects of the future: "get to know the concerns of professionals, make a knowledge map in bioethics and be able to adapt the training offers to the needs of the institution". In this way, he wants this consultative body to become in reference to the territory.
Francesc Ferrer remembers that ethical healthcare positions are needed within the CSI, others: doctor-patient relationship; Efficiency of available resources; artificial fertilization, contraception, sterilization, termination of pregnancy; prenatal genetic diagnosis, gene therapy, clinical trials in oncology; approach and attention to psychiatric disorders and mental health of the citizens and, especially of the health personnel; transplants and artificial or animal organs; assistance in the processes of death and chronic and terminal illnesses.
