Nephrology

Nephrology

Nephrology is a medical specialty whose objective is the diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases that alter kidney function.

The Nephrology Service of the Consorci Sanitari Integral (CSI) provides quality patient-centered nephrology care to people with kidney disease.

To be able to provide comprehensive care to the renal patient, it has a team of Nephrology professionals who work in a coordinated manner with other services of the CSI, of primary care and of the reference hospital (Bellvitge), in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease.

It has a Non-Presential Nephrology consultation for all those consultations received from primary care.

Coordinates with the Nephrology Service of the Bellvitge University Hospital the referral of patients with advanced chronic kidney disease for the evaluation of a kidney transplant.

Units and benefits

Procedures in the Hospitalization Area:

Hospitalization area formed by a team of professionals who attend to patients with acute or chronic kidney disease who enter from the Emergency Department or on a scheduled basis for diagnosis and treatment. Likewise, care is also offered as consultants to the rest of the Hospital's Services.

  • Renal biopsy with the support of the Radiodiagnostic Service
  • Placement of temporary central catheters in patients requiring hemodialysis
  • Renal replacement treatment:
    • Hospital hemodialysis in patients with acute renal failure
    • Hospital hemodialysis in patients with chronic kidney disease
    • Hemodialysis in the Critical Care Unit
Renal replacement treatment unit
  • Outpatient:
    • Chronic ambulatory hemodialysis program. Hemodialysis is a kidney replacement treatment based on circulating blood through a circuit outside the body where accumulated toxins and excess fluids are removed. Hemodialysis treatment is offered online, which has shown better tolerance and better clinical outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease.
    • Peritoneal dialysis program. Renal replacement treatment based on the elimination of toxins and water from the body in which the blood is filtered through a natural membrane, which is the peritoneum.
      • Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Manual process of peritoneal dialysis that requires doing the treatment 3 to 4 times a day. Indicated in patients with heart failure.
      • Automatic peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis with the help of a machine (cycler) that allows the treatment to be done automatically. Usually the treatment is done at night while the patient sleeps.
  • Hospital:
    • Hospital hemodialysis of acute and chronic renal patients. Hemodialysis is a kidney replacement treatment based on circulating blood through a circuit outside the body where accumulated toxins and excess fluids are removed.
    • Hemodialysis in the Critical Care Unit.
    • Other renal purification therapies such as HFR-Supra in coadjuvant treatment in hematological diseases such as multiple myeloma.
