Monitoring and control of pregnancy

Visits to the health center during pregnancy are follow-up visits to monitor the well-being of the woman and the fetus.

Both in our hospital center and in the reference primary care center in the Hospital General de l'Hospitalet area, we use the same pregnancy monitoring protocols and respect the recommendations of the Department of Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

At each visit, the woman receives all the necessary information she should have about her state of health and the well-being of the fetus.

low risk

If the pregnancy is of low risk, most visits take place in the primary care center of reference for women, a Attention to Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASSIR), where a midwife will attend. If any indication of complication is found, follow-up can be referred to our hospital center.

Normal second-trimester (between week 19 and 23) and third-trimester (between week 32 and 35) ultrasound scans in low-risk pregnancies are done in hospital.

From the 36th-37th week of pregnancy, the first obstetric visit is carried out at the hospital, by a midwife. It can be in person or by phone, to open the medical history at the center. From this point on, visits will take place in the hospital until the time of delivery, as well as ultrasounds, if more are needed.

Then, the next visit will be at week 40 of pregnancy. On this day, the fetus will be monitored (registration of the fetal heartbeat and the presence of contractions) and we will assess the state of pregnancy and health.

In the event that it is necessary, because the birth has not occurred spontaneously, from the 41st week onwards, we will make ultrasound visits every 48/72 hours and we will decide together which day we can terminate the pregnancy and induce the party We will always assess the needs and preferences of the person and individualize each case.

high risk

If pregnancy is considered high risk, the visits and ultrasounds will always take place in the hospital center, after referral from the primary care center, therefore, the patient will receive a summons to start the control visits in the hospital.

In this case, the frequency of pregnancy checks is higher than in a low-risk pregnancy and it is very likely that more analytical tests and more ultrasounds will be done than usual. At each visit, the state of health of both the woman and the fetus is reported.

We will decide together when it is time to terminate the pregnancy taking into account the well-being of the woman and her state of health, as well as the well-being of the fetus. The woman's preferences and needs will always be taken into account.

Ultrasounds in the hospital and other diagnostic tests

At Hospital General de l'Hospitalet, ultrasounds and echocardiograms are performed following the Pregnancy Monitoring Protocol in Catalonia (Department of Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia), like other tests for prenatal screening of chromosomal abnormalities: the combined first trimester screening (before 14 weeks), amniocentesis, chorionic biopsy and fetal DNA testing.

At the pregnancy control visit and the ultrasounds, the woman can have a companion but the entry of children under 14 years old is not allowed, given the importance of the examination and the visit that is carried out.
